    I prove that as long as we allow the marginal utility for money (lambda) to vary between purchases (similarly to the budget) then the quasi-linear and the ordinal budget-constrained models rationalize the same data. However, we know that lambda is approximately constant. I provide a simple constructive proof for the necessary and sufficient condition for the constant lambda rationalization, which I argue should replace the Generalized Axiom of Revealed Preference in empirical studies of consumer behavior. 'Go Cardinals!' It is the minimal requirement of any scientifi c theory that it is consistent with the data it is trying to explain. In the case of (Hicksian) consumer theory it was revealed preference -introduced by Samuelson (1938,1948) - that provided an empirical test to satisfy this need. At that time most of economic reasoning was done in terms of a competitive general equilibrium, a concept abstract enough so that it can be built on the ordinal preferences over baskets of goods - even if the extremely specialized ones of Arrow and Debreu. However, starting in the sixties, economics has moved beyond the 'invisible hand' explanation of how -even competitive- markets operate. A seemingly unavoidable step of this 'revolution' was that ever since, most economic research has been carried out in a partial equilibrium context. Now, the partial equilibrium approach does not mean that the rest of the markets are ignored, rather that they are held constant. In other words, there is a special commodity -call it money - that reflects the trade-offs of moving purchasing power across markets. As a result, the basic building block of consumer behavior in partial equilibrium is no longer the consumer's preferences over goods, rather her valuation of them, in terms of money.     Identifying targets for COPD treatment through gene expression analyses

    Despite the status of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as a major global health problem, no currently available therapies can limit COPD progression. Therefore, an urgent need exists for the development of new and effective treatments for COPD. An improved understanding in the molecular pathogenesis of COPD can potentially identify molecular targets to facilitate the development of new therapeutic modalities. Among the best approaches for understanding the molecular basis of COPD include gene expression profiling techniques, such as serial analysis of gene expression or microarrays. Using these methods, recent studies have mapped comparative gene expression profiles of lung tissues from patients with different stages of COPD relative to healthy smokers or non-smokers. Such studies have revealed a number of differentially-regulated genes associated with COPD progression, which include genes involved in the regulation of inflammation, extracellular matrix, cytokines, chemokines, apoptosis, and stress responses. These studies have shed new light on the molecular mechanisms of COPD, and suggest novel targets for clinical treatments

    The G2-MSSM is a model of particle physics coupled to moduli fields with interesting phenomenology both for colliders and astrophysical experiments. In this paper we consider a more general model - whose moduli Kahler potential is a completely arbitrary G2-holonomy Kahler potential and whose matter Kahler potential is also more general. We prove that the vacuum structure and spectrum of BSM particles is largely unchanged in this much more general class of theories. In particular, gaugino masses are still supressed relative to the gravitino mass and moduli masses. We also consider the effects of higher order corrections to the matter Kahler potential and find a connection between the nature of the LSP and flavor effects.Comment: Final version, matches the version published in JHE

    Health-related quality of life of Chinese patients with prostate cancer in comparison to general population and other cancer populations

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of Chinese patients with prostate cancer against the general population and patients with colorectal cancer, breast cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, and leukemia. Methods: Chinese male patients (n = 291) with a confirmed diagnosis of prostate cancer were recruited from a urological specialist outpatient clinic in Hong Kong. HRQOL was measured by a condition-specific Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Prostate (FACT-P) and a generic Chinese (HK) SF-12 Health Survey Version 2 (SF-12v2) questionnaire. Mean HRQOL scores of condition-specific and generic questionnaires were compared to available scores derived from other cancers and age-matched male general population, respectively. Results: Chinese patients with prostate cancer had lower general health and vitality domains and lower mental component summary scores than the age-matched Hong Kong normative population. Patients with prostate cancer reported better condition-specific HRQOL (physical well-being, emotional well-being and function well-being) when compared to general cancer population, patients with breast cancer, colorectal cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, and leukemia in Hong Kong. Conclusions: Patients with prostate cancer substantially perceived their HRQOL to be better, compared to patients with other cancers, with overall health, energy, and mental health below of Hong Kong general population. Interventions should target at these domains in order to improve the HRQOL of patients with prostate cancer.     Psychometric Properties of Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Prostate (FACT-P) in Chinese Patients with Prostate Cancer

    Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess the validity, reliability and sensitivity of the FACT-P (Version 4) in Chinese males with prostate cancer. Methods: Construct validity was assessed using Spearman's correlation test against the 12-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12v2). Internal consistency and test-retest reliability was assessed using Cronbach's α coefficient and intra-class correlation coefficient, respectively. Sensitivity was determined by performing known group comparisons by independent t-test. Results: FACT-P subscale scores had a moderate correlation with the corresponding SF-12v2 domain score that conceptually measures the similar construct providing evidence for adequate construct validity. Internal consistency was acceptable (α: 0.687-0.900) for all subscales aside from the Prostate Cancer Subscale (α: 0.505) and Trial Outcome Index (α: 0.562). FACT-P subscale and total scores showed good test-retest reliability (range: 0.753-0.913). All total scales and most of the subscales were sensitive in detecting differences between subjects with different levels of functional impairment but not different cancer stages or levels of prostate-specific antigen. Conclusions: The measure is a valid and reliable measure to assess the health-related quality of life of Chinese males with prostate cancer.     Carbon monoxide inhibits Fas activating antibody-induced apoptosis in endothelial cells

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The extrinsic apoptotic pathway initiates when a death ligand, such as the Fas ligand, interacts with its cell surface receptor (<it>ie</it>., Fas/CD95), forming a death-inducing signaling complex (DISC). The Fas-dependent apoptotic pathway has been implicated in several models of lung or vascular injury. Carbon monoxide, an enzymatic product of heme oxygenase-1, exerts antiapoptotic effects at low concentration <it>in vitro </it>and <it>in vivo</it>.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Using mouse lung endothelial cells (MLEC), we examined the antiapoptotic potential of carbon monoxide against apoptosis induced by the Fas/CD95-activating antibody (Jo2). Carbon monoxide was applied to cell cultures <it>in vitro</it>. The expression and/or activation of apoptosis-related proteins and signaling intermediates were determined using Western Immunoblot and co-immunoprecipitation assays. Cell death was monitored by lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release assays. Statistical significance was determined by student T-test and a value of <it>P </it>< 0.05 was considered significant.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Treatment of MLEC with Fas-activating antibody (Jo2) induced cell death associated with the formation of the DISC, and activation of caspases (-8, -9, and -3), as well as the pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 family protein Bax. Exposure of MLEC to carbon monoxide inhibited Jo2-induced cell death, which correlated with the inhibition of DISC formation, cleavage of caspases-8, -9, and -3, and Bax activation. Carbon monoxide inhibited the phosphorylation of the Fas-associated death domain-containing protein, as well as its association with the DISC. Furthermore, carbon monoxide induced the expression of the antiapoptotic protein FLIP and increased its association with the DISC.</p> <p>CO-dependent cytoprotection against Fas mediated apoptosis in MLEC depended in part on activation of ERK1/2-dependent signaling.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Carbon monoxide has been proposed as a potential therapy for lung and other diseases based in part on its antiapoptotic effects in endothelial cells. In vitro, carbon monoxide may inhibit both Fas/caspase-8 and Bax-dependent apoptotic signaling pathways induced by Fas-activating antibody in endothelial cells. Strategies to block Fas-dependent apoptotic pathways may be useful in development of therapies for lung or vascular disorders.</p

    Nanosheet thickness-modulated MoS2 dielectric property evidenced by field-effect transistor performance

    We report on the nanosheet-thickness effects on the performance of top-gate MoS2 field-effect transistors (FETs), which is directly related to the MoS2 dielectric constant. Our top-gate nanosheet FETs with 40 nm thin Al2O3 displayed at least an order of magnitude higher mobility than those of bottom-gate nanosheet FETs with 285 nm thick SiO2, benefiting from the dielectric screening by high-k Al2O3. Among the top-gate devices, the single-layered FET demonstrated the highest mobility of similar to 170 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) with 90 mV dec(-1) as the smallest subthreshold swing (SS) but the double-and triple-layered FETs showed only similar to 25 and similar to 15 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) respectively with the large SS of 0.5 and 1.1 V dec(-1). Such property degradation with MoS2 thickness is attributed to its dielectric constant increase, which could rather reduce the benefits from the top-gate high-k dielectric.open115353Nsciescopu

    Duality between N=5 and N=6 Chern-Simons matter theory

    We provide evidences for the duality between N=6{\cal N}=6 U(M)4×U(N)4U(M)_{4} \times U(N)_{-4} Chern-Simons matter theory and N=5{\cal N}=5 O(M^)2×USp(2N^)1O(\hat{M})_{2} \times USp(2\hat{N})_{-1} theory for a suitable M^,N^\hat{M},\hat{N} by working out the superconformal index, which shows perfect matching. For N=5{\cal N}=5 theories, we show that supersymmetry is enhanced to N=6{\cal N}=6 by explicitly constructing monopole operators filling in SO(6)RSO(6)_R RR-currents. Finally we work out the large NN index of O(2N)2k×USp(2N)kO(2N)_{2k} \times USp(2N)_{-k} and show that it exactly matches with the gravity index on AdS4×S7/DkAdS_4 \times S^7/D_k, which further provides additional evidence for the duality between the N=5{\cal N}=5 and N=6{\cal N}=6 theory for k=1k=1Comment: 15 pages; references adde
